Getting dressed in the early 1600s – a talk exploring Jacobean clothes.

Do you know a ruff from a coif, a partlet from a rebato? If not then this talk is for you and will give you everything you need to know (and more) about costume and dress in the early Jacobean period.

  • Booking essential

Join historical re-enactor Carolyn Richardson as she explores what people were wearing in the Jacobean period, between 1603 and 1625. This fascinating talk looks at the clothes that men and women wore, including how you find out what people dressed in 400 years ago and then how you go about recreating it.

Carolyn will be wearing the costume of a well-to-do lady of the house, as well as explaining her outfit she will bring other replica clothing and items to illustrate the talk. It will also include decorative needlework such as lace and embroidery. Carolyn is a member of the '1635 Household' reenactment group, and has extensive knowledge of the clothes, dress, music, food and habits of the period.

This event is linked to the 'Account of Life: Gawthorpe in the 1600s' exhibition.

Booking essential £10 per person, includes refreshments, entry to the Hall and exhibition. The full '1635 Household' will be at Gawthorpe Hall on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June, see events list for more details.
