BioBlitz: a biodiversity survey

Join our BioBlitz event and help us find and identify the many species of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms that live in the grounds of Gawthorpe Hall.

10am - Butterfly Transect through the grounds (Meet in Walled Garden). Carry out a 2km butterfly transect through the grounds, recording any butterfly species we see onsite.

11am - Woodland Walk with National Trust Ranger (Meet outside Hall). Come for a walk with Ranger through the grounds and learn about the biodiversity present on site.

12am - Walled Garden BioBlitz (Meet in Walled Garden). The main sampling of the day, join us as we assess the biodiversity in the Walled Garden. Sweep netting, beat trays, botanical surveys, and grubbing about to identify the many plants and invertebrates that are present in the grounds. Some ID sheets and sampling material is provided, but please feel free to bring your own. We will be recording all species found using the app 'iNaturalist' found on Google play store and Apple app store. Please install the app and create an account prior to attending. The main invertebrate groups will be spiders, molluscs, insects, woodlice, springtails and earthworms.

3pm - Woodland Ecology Walk and Talk (Meet in Walled Garden). Come for a more in-depth walk with a National Trust Ranger and learn about the challenges of conservation and what work is being carried out to improve biodiversity. Discover the different types of woodland present onsite and learn about the different ancient woodland features found here.

What to bring and wear

Sturdy footwear and weather appropriate clothing.

Accessibility

Butterfly transect includes footpaths where ground is mostly even, but is not wheelchair accessible. Woodland walk is accessible for prams and follows the main paths. Bioblitz is mostly grass footpaths through the Walled Garden. Ecology walk involves heading off the main paths and into the woods where the ground may be uneven.

We will be recording all species found using the app 'iNaturalist' found on Google play store and Apple app store. Please install the app and create an account prior to attending.
