This year, 2024, is 150 years on from the monthly publication of Far from the Madding Crowd which was first published in serial form in Cornhill between January and December 1874. The story was a popular attraction for the magazine, before being published the same year in book form.

To mark this anniversary we will be delivering a monthly reading of Far from the Madding Crowd to mirror its serial publication. These will take place on the last Sunday in the month (March-October) starting at 2.30 in Max Gate house.

Everyone is welcome and booking is not necessary but normal admission charges will apply (National Trust members are free). There is no extra charge to hear the reading.

Please note: due to Max Gate being closed in Jan, Feb, Nov and Dec we will be fitting extra chapters into our readings in March, April, September and October so these readings will be slightly longer.
We will be using the original text as contained in the Penguin Classics paperback.

To mark the 150 year anniversary of Far from the Madding Crowd being published in serial form in the Cornhill magazine, we will be doing a monthly reading of the book at Max Gate.
