Tyntesfield Tynings walk

This gentle walk passes through ancient woodland, where there are plenty of flowers to see in the spring and meanders into a hay field full of oxeye daisies in May and June.

Start point

Step 1

Leave from the top left-hand corner of the car park and turn left. Follow the track until you reach a waymark post.

Tyntesfield names

Names give interesting historical clues. Tynings has been known as such since the early 1700s. It comes from a Somerset word for enclosure – the separation of land from common ground by a fence. In the 1837 tithe map it's referred to as The Great Tyning. Fowl Pens is a reminder of the estates decline in the 20th century. It refers to the poultry farm established in the 1940s, which was one of many attempts to boost declining income in the area.

Step 2

Turn left down into the wood, an ancient woodland called Truckle Wood. Follow the path through the woods until you come out on a wide grass track.

Wildlife

Truckle Wood's and Tynings' rich biodiversity is influenced by historic management, with ancient woodland indicators including old coppiced hazels, wood avenues and bluebells. In Tynings, the hedge is home to the yellow-hammer, and buzzards ride the thermals overhead. In late spring, Tynings has meadow flowers including oxeye daisies, birds foot trefoil, red campion, cowslip and wild carrot. Look out for small tortoiseshell, red admiral and meadow brown butterflies and some of the Lesser and Greater Horseshoe bats that forage beneath the lime trees.

Step 3

Turn right down the track to a small gate on your left. Enter the field called Tynings.

Hidden history, decline and rediscovery

Aerial photos of Tynings show evidence of medieval open field cultivation. The area was still farmed in the 19th century. By 1884, the Gibbs family had converted Tynings to parkland, planting clumps, specimen trees and Lime Avenue. In the late 20th century it was ploughed for intensive farming to boost income. Trees were damaged and much archaeology destroyed. The Countryside Stewardship Scheme helped return Tynings to parkland pasture in 2005.

Step 4

Follow the field edge round to your right along the bottom of the field. Now follow the mown path up alongside Lime Avenue. which was planted in the late 1880s.

Step 5

Turn left in the field corner and continue following the edge of the field.

Step 6

Follow this track back to the car park.
