Join us for a family-friendly wassail in the Heddon Valley, to welcome in the New Year. Wassail comes from the phrase "waes hael" which means "be well" and is thought to ensure a bountiful crop of fruit for the year. It is usually celebrated on or around Twelfth Night as a New Year celebration, and is thought to date back to around 600AD.
We will start at the Hunter’s Inn garden for mulled apple juice and Devon apple cake, and the chance to listen to some folk music and find out more about the National Trust’s work in the outdoors from our Lead Ranger Dan. Then follow Garry and his band out to the orchard for a traditional wassail celebration – blessing the apple trees with cider, toast, and lots of music and joyful noise! Please bring along a saucepan and spoon/lid to bang at the ceremony. Please note we will be walking a short distance on a road, in fading light, so bring a torch to see your way. Warm clothing and sturdy footwear advised.
Adult tickets £2, child tickets free (under 16's).
