Bioblitz: a biodiversity survey

Become a wildlife explorer and help us discover and learn about the diversity of the plants and wildlife on the clifftops and chalk downland behind the cliffs.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

We need your help to discover the diversity of our plants and wildlife on the clifftops and downland, finding and identifying as many species as possible. We invite you to become a wildlife explorer for the day and join our friendly, like-minded team on gently-paced walks. This is a 'drop-in' event, with activities and two guided walks, starting at 11.30 am and 1.30 pm - each of 90 minutes' duration. Our experienced guides will help you identify and catalogue the plants and animals you find. You may even find a rare one! We know from photographs and anecdotal evidence that there’s a host of wildlife here - help us record it. You'll also learn about the plants and animals you find. The event is suitable for kids and grown-ups, families and friends, beginners and experts – we’ve something for everyone - and it's dog-friendly too. There will be tables at our Biodiversity tent, with books and samples to examine. There will also be make-and-take fun nature craft activities and face painting.

The basics

Suitability

Supervised children are welcome.

Meeting point

Follow the signs to our Biodiversity event HQ tent in our small car park near the gate to the coast path. Location: www. what3words.com/cheered.appraised.retrieves, postcode CT16 1HJ

What to bring and wear

You can purchase food and drink at the Visitor Centre or bring your own. We recommend long sleeves, long trousers, and stout shoes and socks for the walks as some plants can be prickly.

Accessibility

Guided walks will leave the paths to explore the wildlife on the downland and clifftops. Some terrain will be rough grass, with moderate slopes. Walks may not be suitable for those with impaired mobility, wheelchair or mobility scooter users. Walks will last 90 minutes with stops for wildlife and plant investigation. There'll also be activities at the HQ tent, which is level access.

Other

This is a free drop-in event and there is no need to book. Normal parking charges apply - National Trust members can park for free. If the weather is sunny, we suggest you bring a sun hat, sunblock cream and plenty of drinking water. The event is dog- and child-friendly, but we need to avoid disturbing the wildlife and some walks may pass close to unfenced sections of the cliff edge. We ask that dogs be kept on leads and children supervised on the walks. Accessible toilets and dog water bowls are available at the Visitor Centre near the HQ and activity tents. There are no facilities when out on the walks.
