Lost by Schoolgirls: A Display of 17th Century Papercuts
During renovations of Sutton House in the 1980s, hundreds of items were discovered beneath the floorboards. Dating from the Tudor period until the 1980s, these items went untouched until last year when the rare paper cuttings were identified.

Lost by Schoolgirls is a display of 17th century papercuts found under the floorboards. Lost for three centuries, these paper cuttings tell the story of schoolgirls who attended Mrs Freeman’s school at Sutton House and are an extremely rare example of a 17th century art form. Measuring just a few centimetres in size, visitors are encouraged to tap into their own imaginations and picture the world 17th century schoolgirls were creating with these small papercuts.
