2024 is the 100 year anniversary of the 1924 Mount Everest expedition. Not well known is that the expeditions in 1921, 22 and 24 did a considerable amount of work in photographing and mapping the mountains and glaciers around Everest. This work provides us today with a baseline of data and visual information that allows us to track environmental change in the region including glacial retreat. Also, one of the key messages in the Earth Photo 2024 photography exhibit at Hardwick.
The Royal Geographical Society, Earth Photo Partner, played a key role in the summiting of Mount Everest. Not well known is that early expeditions did a considerable amount of work in photographing and mapping the mountains and glaciers around Everest.
Join, Jamie Owen Photographic Collections Manager for the Royal Geographical Society, for a presentation of original photography, mapping, and artefacts from the expeditions of the 1920’s and a discussion on how this informs our understanding of the region today.
