Archaeological Dig at Petworth
Archaeologists are coming to Petworth on a special mission tracing the footsteps of Henry VIII.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
From 19 - 31 July archaeologists from DigVentures will be at Petworth on a special mission to trace the footsteps of Henry VIII, with the aim of finding evidence two lost buildings that would have stood in the Park in Henry's time. The excavations are part of ‘Henry VIII on Tour’, a landmark research project led by Historic Royal Palaces in partnership with the University of York. For the first time ever, they plan to map every venue occupied by the legendary Tudor king on his ‘royal progress’.
Our local community will be digging alongside archaeologists and processing their discoveries on-site as they are unearthed.
There will be daily tours of the dig site at 2.15pm (excluding Thursday 25 July). You will also be able to see the finds up close in the Battery House, with the opportunity to learn more about them and even handle some items. There will be free family friendly activities including a 'have-a-go' mini archaeology pit, Henry on tour game of chance, and the opportunity to make your own family crest.
