Behind the Walls exhibition

Go back to the 18th-century and “Behind the Walls” to discover the story of Sabine Winn, the Swiss lady of the house from 1765

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Visit the house to discover an exhibition, revealing that behind the luxurious interiors and opulent collections, life inside Nostell was not as it seemed.

Sabine experienced issues back then that we can still relate to now, including issues with her mental health and loneliness.

The exhibition takes a closer look at Sabine’s life, helping to tell the story of her time at Nostell and the challenges she faced.

Take a peek at Sabine’s heartfelt letters which give a glimpse into her life, struggles and interests in apothecary and herbal remedies - including fiery exchanges with her husband who spent a lot of time away on business trips.

Dig into her world, piece it all together and take a moment to view a film showing local community group, Mindful Movers as they share their poignant reflections on her story.

There is also a chance to find out about the herbs Sabine used to make potions and remedies, on an Apothecary Trail in the Kitchen Garden. The trail celebrates Nostell’s medicinal plants, fruit and vegetables, herbs and wildflowers and highlights the benefits these plants can offer.
