Birdwatchers and walkers alike will adore this tranquil two-bedroom cabin retreat, where nature-spotting opportunities abound. Originally built in the 1930s for processing the oyster catch, today you’ll find a snug little bolthole with estuary views, and glorious walks from the door where your neighbours are rare butterflies and red squirrels.

Step through the door and you’ll be drawn in by the contemporary colour scheme of this cosy cottage, which reflects its setting on the National Nature Reserve - the only one on the island. All on one floor, you’ll love the living room with its woodburner, great for warming up after a day exploring. This dog-friendly cabin sleeps four in two bedrooms (one twin and one double) and there’s a shower room and a pretty kitchen/dining room as well. Outside there’s a small garden with big views along the estuary. Soak up the wonderful views of this special place from the table and chairs, which are perfect if you’re planning an alfresco lunch too.

Take some time to explore the former salt pans that make up the reserve, now home to lots of rare and unusual creatures. There are also walks all around to enjoy; across flower-filled meadows, along windswept coastal paths and through dappled woodlands. Beach lovers should head to nearby Compton or Brook (which are dog-friendly off-season) where you’ll find unspoilt sandy stretches perfect for a relaxing seaside day, and where the waves are great for surfing or body boarding.

The pub at Shalfleet is the closest to the cabin, and then pretty Yarmouth with its cobbled streets is around five miles away. You’ll also find a deli and grocery store there along with several coffee shops and pubs. Cowes, famous for its Cowes Week regatta in August, is also worth a visit and is only a 15-minute drive away. If you’re history lovers, then a trip to National Trust places Mottistone (with its enchanting gardens) and Needles Battery (home to a secret rocket testing site) should also be on your holiday to-do list. There are three steps up to the front door, otherwise Newtown Cabin is all one level.

The cabin adjoins the National Trust visitor centre, office and small carpark. This area is very quiet and rural but is popular in the summer.

Offers: Guests will benefit from a late Sunday checkout of 4pm at this cottage. 

*Wifi: We are pleased to provide wifi at this cottage which is supported by BT. Please note that intermittent connection problems can sometimes occur and should not be relied upon.

Heating: Electric panel heating is included.

Logs: Logs can be purchased in advance through the contact centre. Logs are £8.00 per bag or £30 for unlimited access to the log store.

Ferries: We recommend that if you are travelling to the Isle of Wight, you should book the ferries early due to the high demand for popular crossing times at busy times of the year including holiday periods. There are currently three options available depending on your preferred route:

1) Wightlink Ferries - www.wightlink.co.uk - National Trust Holidays guests receive a 25% discount with Wightlink ferries between Lymington and Yarmouth, Portsmouth and Fishbourne and the catamaran between Portsmouth and Ryde (foot passenger service only). The discount is applied once you have selected the crossing times in Wightlink's booking system.

2) Red Funnel Ferries - www.redfunnel.co.uk - National Trust Holidays guests receive a 15% discount between Southampton and East Cowes in Red Funnel's booking system.

3) Hovertravel - www.hovertravel.co.uk – foot passenger hovercraft service only from Portsmouth to Ryde.

Note: Dogs must stay on a lead at all times whilst on the Nature Reserve. Guests will need to go further afield if they wish their dog to roam as it is not permitted at Newtown.
