Start point
Nunnington Hall, grid ref SE 67036 79492
Step 1
Leave Nunnington Hall through the main gates. Don't go over the bridge but instead cross the road with care and bear right onto Low Street.
Step 2
Continue along Church Street, following it left and uphill past the church.
Step 3
At the junction, carry straight on joining a rough track with a fingerpost marked 'Stonegrave 1 mile' heading up to Caulkleys Bank.
Step 4
At the top of the bank, you'll reach a three-way fingerpost. After taking in the views, turn left here towards The Avenue.
Step 5
When you reach the road, cross over to the wide verge where there are more great views. Follow the fingerpost to West Ness along the crest of Caulkleys Bank.
Step 6
Cross the stone track above Stampers Wood and follow the public bridleway, which is flanked by hedgerows.
Step 7
After passing some farm buildings, the bridleway sinks into a stone-bottomed track as it descends towards the lane near West Ness.
Step 8
When the track meets the tarmac lane, continue straight over towards Kirkbymoorside, rather than turning left to Nunnington.
Step 9
After about 275yd (250m), the road bends sharply left, then passes farm buildings, a disused chapel and a phone box. Do not cross the bridge over the River Rye, but turn left onto the footpath signposted 'Nunnington 1.25 miles'.
Step 10
The path follows the river upstream back to Nunnington. You'll pass the Old Mill with its nearby weir.
Step 11
Follow the waymarks away from the river to skirt around the boundary of Nunnington Hall.
Step 12
Turn right at the road and head back towards the Hall.
