Dunham Massey’s mini park loop

Looking for a walk to embrace the outdoors, whatever the season, and whatever the weather? Looping around a small section of the park, this walk will give you a flavour of all this nature haven has to offer. The route is circular so starts and ends at the same place.

Wildlife sanctuary and admission

The route avoids entering the fallow deer sanctuary areas as they are off limits to visitors. Normal admissions apply for entry to Dunham Massey, please see website for details.

Start point

Visitor centre entrance

Step 1

Start outside the entrance to the visitor centre. Face the visitor centre entrance and look to your left, you will see a small open black gate. Go through the gate and follow the path straight ahead of you. Keep following this path along the edge of the moat until you see a set of white deer gates in front of you. Head through the deer gates and into the parkland.

Step 2

Once you have gone through the deer gates, continue straight ahead following the path along the edge of the water, passing the mill on your right. Keep following this path straight ahead, you will pass one lion statue on your left. Pause when you are stood in line with the house, where all the paths from the parkland meet together.

Step 3

Stand facing out towards the parkland with the house behind you. Looking directly ahead, you will see three paths leading upwards towards the top of the park. Take the first path in front of you on your left, this path is called Charcoal drive. Follow this path all the way to the top of the park.

Step 4

As you near the top of the park, you will see a red brick building on your left, this is called the deer barn. Keep following the path, passing the deer barn on your left. As you approach the end of the path, you will see a white gate ahead of you. Look out for an intersection, where another path meets and crosses over the one you are currently on.

Step 5

When you reach the intersection where one path crosses the another, head left, following the curve and now passing the deer barn on your left. Continue straight head, following this path along the edge of the park. You will see sections of the historic wall on your right as you travel along.

Step 6

When you reach the end of the path, turn left, travelling along the tree-lined avenue. Continue straight ahead, passing two lion statues on your right, as you head back the way you came. You will pass the mill on your left this time.

Step 7

Continue following the path leading back towards the white deer gates, you will pass the ancient oak again on your right. Head through the deer gates and carry on straight ahead, following the path along the edge of the moat. Continue following the path as it winds down towards the visitor centre. Go back through the small open black gate to finish where you started outside the visitor centre entrance.
