About Cornwall Erratics

Cornwall Erratics is part of the Hello Stranger programme, created by Wildworks and supported by National Trust places across Cornwall.

Hello Stranger explores the question of what Cornish people would share with a stranger of their lives, their culture, and their communities in Cornwall today.

Wildworks, in collaboration with the National Trust, are collecting stories of Cornwall Erratics -people who either left Cornwall to make their lives elsewhere, or those who arrived in Cornwall and became integral to the place.

We are seeking to reach out to both the communities of the Cornish diaspora and the ‘strangers’ who arrive in Cornwall and make it their home.

What is an erratic?

The term ‘erratic’ comes from the Latin word ‘errare’, which means ‘to wander’.

In geology, an erratic is a rock that has travelled from one landscape and been deposited in another. Often carried by glaciers or galleons, they can range in size from tiny pebbles to gigantic boulders, and they differ from the native rocks typically found in their destination.

Erratics can transform the landscape in which they come to rest.

Erratic people

Wildworks ask: what if this idea applied to people?

In what ways, large or small, have these people shaped the landscape, community, or culture in which they’ve come to rest?

These stories will be presented first online in digital format with a view to presenting them at our places in some form in the future.
