A la Ronde Symposium - 'The octagonal chairs from A la Ronde: finding connections through technical investigation and conservation'

On 11th July 2024 we held our Symposium, entitled ‘Female Craft and Design in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries’. Held at Reed Hall, University of Exeter, we invited a wide range of people to share stories about A la Ronde and how it connects to the wider world. This paper 'The octagonal chairs from A la Ronde: finding connections through technical investigation and conservation' was presented by Nicola Shreeve, as part of the panel 'A la Ronde and National Trust conservation work'.

Nicola Shreeve presented her paper 'The octagonal chairs from A la Ronde: finding connections through technical investigation and conservation' at the A la Ronde symposium 2024.
Biography: Nicola Shreeve
Nicola Shreeve is the National Trust Senior Remedial Conservator for furniture, based at the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio, Knole, Kent.
Originally trained in Furniture Restoration (HND) at the London College of Furniture and working for 30 years as a restorer/conservator in private practice, Nicola returned to full-time education in 2018. Studying at City and Guilds of London Art School, she achieved a BA Hons Conservation of Wood, Stone and Decorative Surfaces, and MA Conservation. Her MA research project focused on the technical investigation and conservation of the Post-reformation polychrome monument to Sir Richard Pecksall, Chapel of St Edmund, Westminster Abbey.
As well as the conservation treatment of a wide range of projects in the studio including cabinet furniture and painted or gilded decorative surfaces, Nicola also visits NT properties across the country to advise property teams on the conservation of furniture.
