Christmas in the house

Collect your key from the welcome centre to unlock the magic of Christmas before embarking on a magical journey through Saltram House.

This year step into a sparkling winter forest in the Saloon, venture into the bustling North Pole where elves are hard at work, and even catch a glimpse of Father Christmas himself - who seems to have found himself stuck in a chimney.

Adding a special touch this year, the Plymouth community has come together to create a stunning Christmas display featuring contributions from local schools, care homes, and Saltram’s dedicated volunteers.

Christmas in the garden

Bundle up and get ready for a magical winter walk in Saltram’s garden. Wander through frosty paths, breathe in the crisp winter air, and enjoy festive touches at every turn. Stop by the Orangery and Castle Folly for displays created by our talented garden team, bringing even more seasonal magic to your stroll.

Kids can explore Saltram's garden to tick jobs of Santa's list. There are seven games to find and festive fun that can't be missed. Collect your special family trail sheet from the welcome centre and set off on a merry adventure. Don’t forget to claim your festive sticker at the bookshop or welcome centre once you’ve completed your journey.

Visit Father Christmas in his grotto (sold out)

Father Christmas will be welcoming families to share their festive wishes, and each child will receive a wrapped Christmas book as a gift. These sessions are perfect for families with young children who want a small, intimate grotto experience. Pre-booking is required for all grotto sessions.

Quiet sessions

Quiet sessions at Saltram’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ event are designed for anyone who would benefit from experiencing Saltram’s decorated house in a calmer environment, alongside others who may be more familiar with additional needs.

These sessions may be particularly enjoyable for visitors with learning disabilities, dementia, autism, neurodivergent or visual impairments. During these sessions, visitor numbers are limited, and lights and sounds can be adjusted where possible.

To aid your experience, sensory bags tailored to Saltram, as well as communication cards, are available. There are 40 tickets available per session, and we recommend arriving between 10:00-10:15am at the Welcome Centre.

Please note that the house will open to other visitors from 11am. There’s no rush to leave before then, but be aware that more people will begin entering the house from this time. Please meet at the front of Saltram House, where our wonderful guides will open the doors for you.

Join Father Christmas for songs and stories (sold out)

Join Father Christmas for a lively musical story session where singing loudly is highly encouraged.

Father Christmas will share tales of Christmases past and guide you through the story of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Don't forget to bring your best singing voices, as Father Christmas will be leading us in some festive favorites to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. At the end of the session, each child will receive a wrapped Christmas book as a gift from Father Christmas.

This isn't your typical Father Christmas experience! Our Santa is loud, a bit cheeky, and loves to play music and instruments while making everyone laugh with his jokes. Please note that the session will begin with loud drumming and music as you enter the room.

Festive storytime with Father Christmas and BSL signing

Join Father Christmas in a special British Sign Language musical storytime session where singing and signing are highly encouraged. Father Christmas will share tales of Christmases gone by as well as guide you through the story of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Father Christmas (Clive PiG) and our BSL signer (Jase Trotter) will be singing and signing festive favourites to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. At the end of the session, you will receive a wrapped Christmas book as a gift from Father Christmas.

A relaxed Father Christmas means fewer people in each session, with more space to accommodate wheelchairs, ear defenders, or the flexibility to leave your seat during the show. This is not your average Father Christmas experience! Our Santa can be loud at times (and a little cheeky), playing musical instruments and telling jokes to keep everyone laughing.

Please note, the session will begin with loud drumming and music. You can choose to enter the room once the drumming has finished. A quiet room will also be available during the session if you need to step out at any time. This room is accessible via a ramp.

This session is designed for families with children over the age of 6. It is a 45-minute sit-down session, best suited for children who can engage for this duration. Songs and Stories sessions must be pre-booked. Please check back on this page soon for booking details.

If you require a familiarisation visit, please contact Saltram, and we will try to accommodate this where possible. We are also offering BSL grotto sessions for families who would prefer a conversation with Santa and a gift. Please see below for further details.

These sessions are ideal for families who require BSL or are part of the deaf community. If you do not require BSL, please consider booking another session to reserve these dates for families who need a signer.

Please note: Entry to Father Christmas does not include admission to the house or gardens, which must be booked separately.

Join Father Christmas and BSL signing in the Grotto

Father Christmas will be welcoming families to share their festive wishes and receive a wrapped Christmas book as a gift. Our BSL signer will also be available to help families communicate with Father Christmas.

These grotto sessions are perfect for families looking for a more relaxed experience or for those who require a British Sign Language signer.

Pre-booking is required for all Grotto sessions.

If you do not require a BSL signer, please consider attending one of our other Father Christmas grotto sessions, which do not need to be pre-booked. We want as many families as possible from the deaf community or those who require BSL to have access to Father Christmas.

Please note: Entry to Father Christmas does not include entry to the house, which needs to be booked separately.

Accessibility at Saltram

We aim to make Saltram as accessible and welcoming as possible:

  • Parking: Accessible and disabled parking spaces are available.
  • Paths and mobility: Level paths in the garden are suitable for wheelchairs. An all-terrain Tramper is available to book - please email us at saltram@nationaltrust.org.uk to reserve.
  • In the house: The maximum size for a wheelchair that can enter the house is 70cm wide and 1m in depth/length at its widest point. We have a mat in Visitor Welcome and outside of the house for visitors to measure the size of their wheelchair.
Electric wheelchairs of the same size are permitted in the house, as long as they fit between the two white lines on the ramp and its turning circle is within its own axis. Unfortunately mobility scooters are not currently allowed within the house.
For visitors unable to access the remaining spaces, a room guide will accompany them to the staircase hall, where a video tour of the final spaces is available to ensure everyone can enjoy the experience.
Please note that visitors with pushchairs are asked to leave them outside of the house in the pushchair parking tent.
  • Hearing support: Audio induction loops are installed in the café and Welcome Centre for visitors with hearing aids.
  • Toilets and baby changing: Adapted toilets with baby-changing facilities are located in the Stables. An additional disabled toilet is available at the Park Café.
