Timbers excavated at Rayleigh Mount on display at Rayleigh Town Museum, mounted upright, in troughs of small stones

Castle Timbers come home to Rayleigh

The Rayleigh Mount timbers came home in 2023, to be displayed in Rayleigh Town Museum. These were excavated in the twentieth century. They are of varying length and further research is needed to fully understand them. The timbers are believed to be nearly a thousand years old and the museum is investigating a conservation regime to support their long-term care. Do check out the opening times of the museum when you visit the Mount and drop in, to see not only the timbers but also their eclectic collection bringing to life everyday characters of the town.
