This May Half Term, immerse yourself in the world of Helix Pomatia, the Roman SnailThese snails, a protected species, have resided in Britain for nearly two millennia, initially brought by the Romans as a culinary delicacy.

The annual Roman Snail Trail offers an engaging experience for all ages. A highlight is the new audio tour, featuring "Pom" the Roman Snail, guiding families through sixteen stops around the Villa. Active participants can also transform into snails in the Human Snail Racing arena, complete with wearable shells and eyes, or test their luck on the Giant Snail Slip ‘n Slide, an outdoor board game where participants slide their way to victory or risk landing in the cooking pot.

Additional activities include the Gastropod Gladiator Course, an archaeological obstacle course, and an exhibit of replica Roman snail dishes showcasing ancient recipes. Visitors can also examine the intricate patterns of snail shells up close at a magnifying station. Families can enjoy Snail Twister, a snail-themed version of the classic game, and Shell Shuffle, a snail shell-shaped balance beam.

Other snail-themed activities include Snailed-it, a beanbag throwing game, and a games pavilion filled with snail-themed puzzles. Visitors are encouraged to find Pom, the Villa's beloved mascot, hidden around the ancient walls, mosaics, and bathhouses, and to track their snail sightings on a giant spotter map.
