Afton Down Nature Rambles: Spring Birds
Join us for a series of guided nature walks at Afton Down, starting with birdwatching and exploring the wildlife of this beautiful landscape, led by expert birder Nick Lever.
- Booking essential
Nick will guide you through identifying birds such as Stonechat, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, and Yellowhammer, helping you recognise their calls and songs. Suitable for ages 10 +, these walks are a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, learn about local wildlife, and develop your birdwatching skills.
Bring binoculars if you have them (Nick’s telescope will be available for close up views), wear sensible walking shoes, and dress for the weather – Afton Down can be quite exposed. Please note for accessibility, some ground is uneven and unstable.
Start and finish your walk at the Bike Box, where you can enjoy a selection of hot and cold drinks, cake and snacks (Nick recommends the delicious coffee and hot chocolate), all while taking in one of the best views on the island.
Nick has a lifelong love of birds and natural history. After studying Botany and Zoology at Reading University in the 80s, he enjoyed birding around Britain and Europe, including a stint as a bird tour guide in Cyprus and Devon. Nick has lived on the Isle of Wight since 2016 and now does most of his birding at The Bike Box Café – so he’s the perfect person to show you the local birds.
