Join us for a jam-packed day of fun at Gibside to celebrate the 20th anniversary of red kites being reintroduced to the Derwent Valley.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
It’s the 20th anniversary of red kites being reintroduced to the North East after 170 years of these magnificent birds of prey being absent from our skies. Friends of Red Kites are joining us for a day of family fun at Gibside to celebrate red kites and their continuing work to protect them.
Enjoy entertainment from Go North East including a bubble artist and face painting. Check out their double decker red kite bus which will be stationed in Gibside Market Place.
Help Friends of Red Kites construct their giant 22m wide red kite mosaic on Gibside Avenue and try your luck at their tombola, offering a range of prizes including a ‘Toon Tour’ voucher for Go North East travel, a family day pass to Gibside, or a meal for two at Thornley Woodlands Café. Learn about the life cycle of a red kite from a series of banners displayed in the Walled Garden, created by Gibside Sewing Group volunteers.
For those wanted to learn more about bird conservation in the North East, there will be a bird ringing demonstration from 10am-3pm at Gibside Stables.
You might even spot a red kite flying overhead!
All activities are free (normal admission applies).
