Guided bike ride: The Customs House to Souter Lighthouse

Join cycle leaders Janet and Steven for a 10 mile round trip around South Shields and along the coast.

Cycle from The Customs House along parts of Hadrian's Cycle Way to Arbeia Roman Fort. Follow the coast along to Souter Lighthouse, returning via part of National Cycle Route 1. This ride will include a 20 minute visit to the fort and a stop for lunch.

Please bring your own bike that is safe and fit for the ride. It must be mechanically sound, with two working breaks and gears. All bikes will be checked by the cycle leaders prior to the ride. They will refuse the use of the bike if they deem it unsafe.

The route is surfaced with cycleways and minor roads (under 30 mph).

What to bring and wear

Please bring a bike, helmet, water and a snack, and wear clothes suitable for the weather.

Accessibility

All routes are surfaced with tarmac. There are gentle gradients along the route.

Parking is free at The Customs House, but some parts are council owned and require payment. Be sure to check before leaving.
