The RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch is an annual event which brings hundreds of thousands of nature lovers together to check in on the UK's garden bird population. 

This year, you can help us count birds at Washington Old Hall and be part of something special. 

Why take part? In the words of the RSPB (from their website): Every Birdwatch counts.
Across the UK, over 600,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2024, counting a whopping 9.7 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.

Take a wander through the gardens on our self-led trail, keeping your eyes peeled to spot as many types of bird as you can.

February half term: Bird spotter trail

Build a bird box from scratch and learn about the birds it may attract to nest in your garden (or in a friend’s, relative’s or your school’s garden). By spring there might be a feathered family in it!

When you're done, you can tick 'Make a home for wildlife' off your '50 things to do before you're 11 3/4' list too.

No need to book - drop in any time between 11am-3pm.

We're getting hands-on to help birds this half term.

February half term: Build a bird box

Local musicians bring the historic hall to life with live performances. You can hear duo Julie and William on the first Monday of most months, while Carol and Bryan join us on a more ad hoc basis. 

Expect music from 1400 to 1750: medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, by composers from England and western Europe. Plus some tunes with a local flavour, such as The Lambton Worm.
