Montacute House is an Elizabethan masterpiece of architecture and design. Its warm Hamstone construction casts playful shadows across the elegant garden, making it the perfect backdrop for a family day out. Take a stroll around the garden and enjoy the changing colours of the season or seek out the swings in the parkland.

Summer activities

Lots of family fun to be had at weekends in July and during the school holidays. You can borrow some of the play equipment available in the family picnic area 10am-4.30pm. There will be hoops, skipping ropes, inflatable bouncers, footballs, quiots, building blocks, mini wheelbarrows and much more to keep everyone busy.

For those of you who want to get creative, Zac Newham, local talented wood artist, will be back on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during school holidays; 10.30am-4pm. With Zac’s help, children aged 7+ and adults will be able to create wooden animals to take home and treasure. Prices range from £5-20 and no booking is required. Just remember to bring lots of energy and imagination with you this summer.

Picnicking at Montacute House

There are lots of great picnic spots including the Garden Orchard on the South Drive. It’s one of the less formal areas of the garden, making it ideal for eating picnics and for games of hide and seek. Around the Stables are several wooden picnic benches, including some that can accommodate wheelchairs. Should the rain appear, there is also a covered area.
