Discover frost covered topiary, winding garden paths and fragrant, winter-flowering plants in our gardens in Surrey. Wrap up warm and come out for an uplifting winter stroll at Polesden Lacey, Claremont Landscape Garden, Hatchlands Park and Winkworth Arboretum.
The formal gardens at Polesden Lacey take on a quiet charm in winter, with their stone walls and topiary. The views from the south lawn are glorious in the winter light and there are plenty of walks to try on the wider estate. In January and February the Winter Garden is a beautiful place to find snowdrops, winter aconites and delicately flowering Persian Ironwood trees.
Laced with frost and dotted with unusual winter blooms, Winkworth Arboretum is a secret haven during the colder months. Wrap up warm and discover 149 acres of understated tranquillity in this fascinating wintry woodland. In January and February look out for patches of cheery snowdrops and rare varieties of flowering witch hazel trees.
Shake off the winter gloom with an invigorating walk around Claremont's historic royal landscape. Say hello to the waterfowl braving the cold, admire the huge eighteenth-century grass amphitheatre and warm up with a slice of delicious cake and coffee. It's a lovely place for a romantic walk.
Get your boots on, grab the kids or the dog, and head to Hatchlands for wonderful walking. Open every day of the year, we’ve got great waymarked walks for you to follow or just pick up a map and find your own path.
The welcome signs of spring are on show in our gardens from March onwards. Enjoy the sight of daffodils at Polesden Lacey in early spring. Then blossom and bluebells as spring warms up into April and May at Winkworth Arboretum and Hatchlands Park. Claremont Landscape is home to glorious rhododendrons in flower in May.
Come for a stroll around the pleasure grounds of Polesden Lacey, take in the views of the Edwardian house framed by fields of daffodils and spring bulbs. The heritage varieties in the rose garden’s outer borders date back to Polesden’s last private owner Mrs Greville’s time and before.
Little Wix Wood at Hatchland Park is one of the finest bluebell woods in Surrey. This quiet patch of ancient woodland was first recorded in the Chertsey Chronicles during the 13th century. Take the Wix Woods Walk, following the blue way-marker posts, to get there.
Winkworth really comes to life in spring, with the magnolia blooms joined by cherry blossom and drifts of bluebells. The azalea walk is a mass of colour at the end of April, lining the path to the boathouse which overlooks the lake.On the Bluebell Walk, the woodland floor comes alive in April and May with breathtaking fields of purple. These mostly native bulbs are one of Winkworth's most famous and beloved sights.
Spring offers the chance to stroll through corridors of rhododendrons, feed tiny goslings, and make the most of the longer days in this historic royal pleasure ground.
