About Great Orme
Rich in wildlife, archaeology, and geology, the Great Orme is an impressive headland that offers stunning views of the North Wales coast. The rock is carboniferous limestone, formed around 350 million years ago from dead sea organisms, which has created a unique habitat dominated by calcareous (limestone) grasslands and heathlands. As well as being home to rare species such as Chough and the endemic Wild Cottoneaster, hundreds of archaeological sites ranging from round houses to field boundaries show evidence of human activity stretching back to the Stone Age. Cared for by National Trust Cymru and managed by a tenant, Y Parc on the summit of the Great Orme is farmed in an environmentally friendly way. Work is ongoing to develop a wildflower meadow beside the permissive footpath, to plant trees and scrub in areas, and to repair the impressive stone wall surrounding the farm. As part of the Great Orme Partnership, the heathland outside the farm is traditionally grazed by the farm tennant, for the benefit of nature.
