Cycling to Avebury

Avebury is connected to two routes (45 and 403) on the National Cycle Network.

Route 45 runs from Salisbury in the south through Pewsey and onto Avebury. From the north, the route connects with Swindon and Chiseldon before heading through Barbury Castle Country Park and on to Avebury.

Route 403 runs through Marlborough and then across the Fyfield Down Nature Reserve and on to Avebury.

If you are heading from west to east, the route goes through Calne and on to the village of Yatesbury before you arrive at Avebury.

Avebury is also connected to the King Alfred’s Way cycling route, which is a 350km off-road adventure through Wessex and its historic sites.

Part 4 of the route starts at Chirton in the Vale of Pewsey and runs for 15km before finishing at Avebury.

Walking to Avebury

If you would like to walk to Avebury, the site is 6.5 miles from Marlborough and 6 miles from Calne.

The route from both locations takes you away from the main A4 road and through areas of rolling countryside.

Avebury can also be accessed from the 5,000-year-old Ridgeway National Trail, one of England’s most ancient routes.

Section 1 of the trail (Overton Hill to Ogbourne St George) connects to Green Street, which leads directly to the entrance of the henge and stone circles.
