As a special feature of our last weekend before our seasonal closure on November 2nd and 3rd, Elgar biographer and regular speaker at The Firs, Richard Westwood-Brookes will be giving special one hour talks in which he will explore two of Elgar’s finest works.
On Saturday November 2nd he will delve into the ‘Cello Concerto - and provide answers to the following questions - how did Elgar come to write it ? Was it inspired by the First World War ? Why was it his last great work ? The talk will be accompanied by excerpts from the work itself.
On Sunday November 3rd he will examine what he believes to be the finest symphony ever written - Elgar’s remarkable Second Symphony - and counter many of the erroneous notions that have developed about it over the years - and Richard will explain why it is indeed one of the most important pieces of music of all time. Again he will be illustrating the talk with extracts from the music itself.
