Making charcoal and sound maps

Join the ranger team, make some charcoal and create a sound map this February half term.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Join the ranger team in Swanley Grange who will teach you how to make a fire responsibly, burn sticks safely and create charcoal.

Once you’ve made your charcoal, head to Swanley Garden to create your own sound map. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, listen to what’s going on around you and then try to draw where those sounds are coming from on your paper.

There will be two sessions running on both Thursday and Friday of half term. You can drop in any time between 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm.

The basics

Meeting point

Make your way to Swanley Grange workshop, just a 10 minute walk from the visitor centre, a 10-15 minute walk from the West Gate entrance or a 40 minute walk from Studley Royal

What to bring and wear

Swanley Grange workshop is indoors, but we're a predominately outdoor site - there are areas of uneven ground and slopes so please wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather.

Accessibility

Swanley Grange is accessed on level ground from the Visitor Centre, a 10 minute walk. From West Gate (15 minutes) or Studley (30 minutes) there is a steep hill (15-20% gradient) to access Swanley.
