Close to London but far from the hustle and bustle, this charming cottage offers a peaceful, woodland escape in the Weald and near Ashdown Forest. Built for the gamekeeper in 1868, it looks just like a fairytale woodcutter's cottage.
Nestled in the woods at Nymans, it's perfectly placed for walking, cycling, bird and wildlife watching. Paths lead through the woodland to a lake, cascades, sandstone outcrops and giant redwood trees. You have free entry to National Trust places during your stay, and beyond the woods at the top of the hill, you'll find Nyman's manor house, ruins and listed gardens with rare and unusual plants. There's also a café, shop, plant centre and small gallery. There's a natural play area and in school holidays, you'll find many family-friendly things to do.
It's a 30-minute drive to Brighton's beach and historic lanes, or to the extensive biking and walking trails of the South Downs. You'll find another National Trust holiday cottage, Chodds Farmhouse (sleeps six), a 10-minute walk away in the lovely village of Handcross, which has independent shops, a café and pub.
