In the depths of winter our house team is carrying out a ‘deep clean’ on a grand scale. After an initial condition inspection to check for deterioration including signs of pests like carpet beetle and moth, staff shin up scaffold towers to ever so gently dust and vacuum ornate gilded mirrors, four poster beds, sparkling crystal lights and medieval stonework. In the famous Whistler room you might spy them high up, cleaning the fantastical leopard-print pelmets designed by Rex Whistler in 1939. Cleaning takes place from 25 January when the house is partially open (until around 1pm) and finishes when the house fully opens on 15 February.
