With a view to further enhancing the visitor experience, the Elizabethan garden at Tŷ Mawr is now being restored by local volunteers with the support of National Trust staff which will provide another focal point for visitors.

Much of the groundwork for the small Elizabethan-style garden, with an adjacent seating area, was created at the property in 2011 by the then Warden and a local landscaper. Digging work began in December 2023 with the edging also being replaced.

Planting work is now well underway in the garden. The existing design is consistent with research done into Tudor and Elizabethan gardens, and the new planting comprises plants known to have been grown in that period. Consideration has been given to maximising year-round sensory appeal, whilst also featuring plants referenced in Shakespeare’s writings and The Bible, thus forming an additional connection with the history of the house and its occupants.
