Routes to Roots - Heritage Open Days Festival

Experience the challenges faced by plant hunters as they forged new routes across the globe in pursuit of plants. Discover which familiar plants came from faraway places to root on this Barnsley estate. Free entry during the festival.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event

Discover how plants, now firmly rooted as garden favourites, were once regarded as foreign and exotic.

Get hands on with the challenges faced by centuries of plant hunters as they strove to open up new routes across the world and to bring home new introductions to root in this country.

Test your skills at identifying, describing, navigating and recording plants. Would you make the grade?

Learn more about Wentworth Castle Gardens' special plants and the structures built to care for them.

Admission is free for everyone during the three days of the festival.

On Friday 13 September join a volunteer-led 'Restoration in progress' tour of the Orangery and Walled garden. Tours run at 11am, 12pm, 1pm & 2pm. These areas are usually not open to visitors. Tours must be booked in advance - see separate event listing.
