Felted Belties Craft Event

To help celebrate Marking Day on the Commons, and the release of the cows back on to this shared land, join us for craft making sessions to create your own belties!

  • Booking essential
  • Admission applies

Belted Galloway cattle, affectionately known as "Belties," are a distinctive and hardy breed originating from Scotland. They are easily recognized by their striking black (or sometimes red or dun) coats with a broad white belt around their midsection. This unique coloration makes them stand out - they were developed in the 17th or 18th century in the rugged Galloway region, where their thick, double-layered coat provided insulation against harsh weather, eliminating the need for excessive fat to keep warm. This trait makes them well-suited for cold climates and allows them to thrive on rough forage that might challenge other breeds. They are also known for their docile temperament, ease of calving, and strong maternal instincts, making them a great choice for our patch.

Join us for two sessions in May to help celebrate Marking Day - learn how to craft your own felted beltie cow - tools, accessories and full tuition provided by our team.
