Mischief in Miniature

The Tale of Two Bad Mice comes to life at Hill Top, with little needle-felted mice in various mischievous scenes around the property for you to try and spot.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

'Mischief in Miniature' brings to life the nostalgia of Beatrix Potter's tale featuring the mischievous mice, Hunca Munca and Tom Thumb. This enchanting experience is designed to delight visitors of all ages with miniature scenes from the book, along with other 'acts of mischief' that the pair might engage in at Hill Top. As though they have jumped from Beatrix’s pages, tiny mice can be discovered in various nooks and crannies throughout the property, illuminated by small candles and lanterns that add an extra touch of magic to your experience.

Let us know your favourite acts of mischief by sharing pictures on social media with the #mischiefinminiature, tagging Hill Top, @ntlakedistrict and @nationaltrust.

This experience accompanies the new exhibition ‘Pets to Page: The Tale of Two Bad Mice', which will reveal the real-life inspiration for Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Two Bad Mice (1904).

The basics

Suitability

This event welcomes children accompanied by adults.

Meeting point

Visitors should head to the visitor reception by the car park first to collect their visit token and find out how many acts of mischief the team have seen for you to spot on the day.

What to bring and wear

Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather. Be mindful that you may be asked to leave large bags and umbrellas in lockers to protect the contents of the house.

Accessibility

Unfortunately some of Hill Top is not accessible, but we have made sure there are acts of mischief in places that are. Please call ahead if you have any questions.

Other

The 'acts of mischief' change throughout the year, so there will always be something new to spot at Hill Top. As we have a small car park, we recommend taking public transport where possible or booking your space ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Mischief in Miniature is a part of the house experience and does not cost any extra. Please check that the property is open before visiting, as there are some days throughout the year that it may be closed, which are not reflected in this event listing.
