  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Ray Woods, Lichen Specialist, will be leading a guided walk through the Dinefwr Deer Park. He’ll highlight the key features of this beautiful habitat and seek out some examples to show you.

One of the reasons Dinefwr is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is due to the 160 species of lichen and bryophytes that can be found here. Some of these species are nationally important or rare and even a few that are of international importance.

These species do so well at Dinefwr as it is one of the few places in the centre of South Wales identified as having habitat that would qualify it as Temperate Rainforest, sometimes referred to as the Celtic Rainforest. Examples of habitat stretch from the tip of Cornwall all along the western edge of the UK up to the far north and the western shores of Scotland. This habitat is made of rare oak dominated woodland with high rainfall and high humidity where Mosses, Lichens and Bryophytes thrive. Alongside this event, a visit to Dinefwr includes the magnificent Newton House and its garden, sat within a historic nature-rich parkland, adjacent to the ancient Deer Park and Dinefwr Castle. Within the house there are three floors to explore, including a series of exhibitions, the café and second-hand bookshop. There’s always children’s activities in the house, the Oak Yard open for play in the main season and plenty of places to explore outdoors.

Free to attend, but normal admission prices to will apply.
