Rothley Lakehouse

Impress your family and friends when you stay in this remarkable and spacious lakeside cottage. Rothley Lakehouse is ideal for special occasions, celebrations and family gatherings. 

Once you’ve soaked up the tranquil lake views, step inside to find a large reception hall which leads to a sitting room, drawing room and dining room. From there you can reach the conservatory and the garden. Downstairs there’s also the main kitchen, breakfast room, utility room, shower room. Upstairs you’ll find six bedrooms, sleeping up to 11 people, all with views of either Rothley Lake or the garden. There are also two bathrooms with roll top baths and separate shower cubicles.

For the remaining guests, there’s an opportunity for some peace and quiet in the adjoining annexe. It has its own entrance, bathroom, two bedrooms upstairs and one bedroom downstairs, sleeping up to five people.

Outside there’s a large, enclosed garden with views of Rothley Lake and ample seating for everyone – perfect for al fresco dining. The surrounding area is full of wildlife, so you’ll have no shortage of things to spot including deer, owls and pheasants. 

There’s a large, enclosed area for exercising dogs at the end of path across the garden. Dogs can run free and explore, but please do supervise them as there’s livestock in the surrounding area. Please also clean up after them. There’s a dog shower by the back door which leads into the utility room. It’s next to the outdoor tap, handy for cleaning paws, boots and bikes.

Rothley Lake was inspired by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who was born in Northumberland and one of Britain’s most famous landscape designers. The house on Rothley Lake was built to be a shooting lodge by the Trevelyan family who had inherited Wallington. Sir Charles Trevelyan donated Wallington Estate to the National Trust to ensure that families could enjoy it for generations to come.

There are many National Trust places nearby to explore, such as Wallington, Hadrian’s Wall, Seaton Delaval Hall and Cragside, a filming location for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Other places of interest to visit include Northumberland National Park, Alnwick Castle and Gardens, and Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. There are also many walking and cycling routes around Northumberland's countryside and coast, including the cycle route from Wallington to Blyth or the 4.2km River Walk at Wallington.

When you’ve had your fill of countryside, head to Rothbury village, approximately 13 miles away, for a range of shops including antique and niche gift shops, with many galleries, tea rooms and pubs. You can also go on many riverside walks, where you may come across some historical landmarks. For another place rich in historical landmarks, walks and quaint shops, the bustling town of Morpeth is your next stop – a traditional market town with stylish highstreets just over 12 miles away. Ponteland is 15 miles away and is a great destination for cafes, bars and restaurants.

Newcastle International Airport, which is on the city’s Metro line, is just 17 miles from Wallington, from which a 20 minute taxi ride will get you to the Lakehouse, allowing travel by air and rail.
