A light and cosy cottage in Wallington’s courtyard, surrounded by walking and cycling trails.
Wash House Cottage is in a row of cottages overlooked by the historical house at Wallington, with the walled garden, woodland, adventure playground and trails all on its doorstep. With neighbouring cottage Laundry Cottage, it was part of the laundry for the main house with estate workers living in flats above. It was improved by Mary Trevelyan in the 1930s upon inheriting Wallington. Look out for the original tile upstairs featuring her name.
The cottage is light, fresh and cosy, with handy features like a boot room and locked bike storage. Downstairs, there’s space to relax by the sitting room’s wood burner, looking out onto mature trees and the courtyard, and to gather round the table in the dining kitchen. Upstairs you’ll find two double bedrooms, a single bedroom and a family bathroom.
You’ll have your own well-manicured garden at the front of the cottage overlooking the courtyard, and to the rear is an enclosed garden with seating and views of the grounds.
At Wallington there are walks along the riverside, and through woodland and grassy fields. The Dragon cycle trail is great for all ages. You’ll be able to enjoy estate walks in the evening, after other visitors have gone home for the day. While you’re out, spot wildlife including red squirrels, otters and white-clawed crayfish.
During opening hours take a look in the main house, and wander the Walled Garden, Edwardian conservatory and peaceful Mary Pool. You’ll find National Trust places Hadrian’s Wall, Lindisfarne Castle, Seaton Delaval Hall, Gibside and Cragside are also nearby, as well as the beach at Seaton Sluice which is a haven for wildlife and a desginated area of Special Nature Conservation. Visit the villages and towns of Rothbury, Ponteland and Morpeth for shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants.
Wash House Cottage is next door to Laundry Cottage, a National Trust holiday cottage for 5 people. Larger groups can book both cottages together.
